Overview

OYO has been a pioneer in the environment application area, too. Concurrent with the rapid industrialization of Japanese economy in the 1960's, the pollution and other environmental problems exacerbated. As for underground water, OYO, in 1982, conducted investigation covering 15 major cities and 1,360 wells all over Japan at the request of the Ministry of Environment of Japan. OYO also assisted the Ministry in preparing guidelines and action manuals to be used by the municipal governments.

Pollution Prevention and Remediation

Investigation and remediation project

It took place in a small island called Teshima in the 1990's, where industrial waste had been illegally dumped for years. On a premise of 7 ha, the industrial waste together with polluted soil of 670,000 tons were left to be treated. OYO, at the request of the public committee, engaged itself in the entire process of the project operation. After years of concerted efforts with various parties, the project was completed and the expected level of recovery was accomplished.

OYO has developed a biological remediation technology with products known as BD-1 and BD-C. These products activate the bacteria in the soil which decompose some harmful materials in question. This technology, thereby, provides an "in-situ" resolution of the pollution problem, which is safe and far more economical than other remediation methods.

Preserving and Reviving Natural Environment

Kushiro Wetland Recovery Project

After ecological investigation and analysis, the flowing water route of a river was changed to its original direction. This was because the river environment had been much affected by the previous public works, which reduced the number of living creatures in the region. 　 The project's aim was to restore the original conditions for the benefit of both Man and Nature.

"OYO Ecological Engineering Institute"

OYO has a unique research laboratory to support these operations. It is the "OYO Ecological Engineering Institute" located right beside a dam north of Tokyo. It is here that OYO's ecological studies of long-term nature are being carried out, utilizing living samples available in the vicinity of the dam. Effects of water, climate and other living conditions are analyzed to support OYO's activities.
